Types of Learning Models
What is COIL?

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) connects classrooms across countries through virtual collaboration. Students and educators work together online on shared lessons, discussions, and projects, gaining global perspectives without traveling.

What is Short-Term COIL?

Short-Term or Intensive COIL offers focused global learning experiences over a shorter period of time, often during winter or summer terms, themed intensives, or project-based exchanges.

What is LICOIL?

Language Intensive Collaborative Online International Learning (LICOIL) combines language learning with global collaboration. Participants develop language skills while engaging in content-based projects and intercultural exchange with international partners.

What is Academic Connections COIL/LICOIL?

Academic Connections COIL/LICOIL is a hybrid model that brings together key elements of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), Short-Term / Intensive COIL, and Language-Integrated COIL (LICOIL). Unlike traditional COIL or LICOIL models that are embedded within institutional curricula, Academic Connections events and programs operate independently of formal institutional coursework. Our webinars and short-term COIL projects/courses are designed as flexible, self-enrichment opportunities that connect students and educators for academic and professional learning. Participants engage voluntarily to expand global perspectives, build intercultural skills, and collaborate across borders, without the requirements or constraints of a credit-bearing course.
