College Planning
and Placement
Services
Academic
Connections provides in-depth
consulting services to help students prepare for college and define
their educational goals.
Dr. Daria Rockholz meets personally with students and their families
to discuss individual interests, abilities, needs and goals. A
comprehensive college placement consultation entails 20+ hours of the
following individualized services that direct students, step-by-step,
through the entire application process. In addition, each student and
family benefits from Dr. Rockholz’ extensive year-round research,
college visitation and database development. College consulting and
planning services begin, ideally, during the student’s sophomore or
junior year of high school.
Specific consulting services include combinations of the following,
as needed:
-
Individual and
family interviews
-
Assessment of
student’s academic strengths, needs, interests and goals
A thorough review of the student’s high school transcript,
standardized test scores (e.g., PSAT, SAT, ACT), extracurricular
activities, community involvement, special talents and skills,
unique learning needs, and special accomplishments is conducted to
determine a clear direction with specific goals and targets for
post-secondary educational options and placement.

strengths and career interests.
-
Advice concerning
selection of teacher recommendations
What makes a good recommendation and how do you identify teachers
who are suited to provide a strong, supportive letter? Students are
guided to create a personal resume and to submit this
to teachers for a more targeted, effective letter of support.
-
Contacts with high
school guidance counselor(s) and other appropriate professionals
(e.g., tutors, teachers, physicians), as authorized
It is often helpful to review the student’s unique learning style
and needs with other qualified professionals.
-
Specific guidance
with the college essay
Writing the personal statement essay is an opportunity for
students to stand apart from other applicants, and to highlight
personal information that may not be captured on the application
itself. Starting with a brainstorming session, and working through
multiple drafts, students are assisted with writing style, tone,
punctuation and format -- until the essay reflects the student’s
best work and is worthy of submission to the most selective
colleges!
-
Conducting mock
interviews with full critique and role modeling
Although not required by all colleges, the interview can often be
a determining factor in admission decisions, especially for a
borderline candidate. Students are coached to interview with
confidence so that their unique skills and strengths are
highlighted.
-
Specific list of
appropriate programs and/or colleges
The final selection -- a list of appropriate target colleges,
based on focused research and multiple interactive discussions will
be provided, complete with contact names, addresses and valuable
admissions information.
-
Critiquing,
revising, editing and evaluating all application documents (e.g.,
forms, writing samples, video and portfolio presentations)
All documents are thoroughly reviewed and edited together with
the student prior to submission.
-
Providing families
with basic information regarding tuition financing and scholarships
Families are directed to current resources for financial aid,
merit aid, and scholarship information and availability.
-
Continued
availability for telephone consultation for one semester after
placement.
Ongoing follow-up to ensure student placement success and initial
adjustment is included with the consultation services package.
Other services
include:
Assistance with
early decision choices, college visits, supplemental activity
sheets, and help with making the final decision of which college to
ultimately attend. Continuous support is offered to the student and
family throughout the entire process.
